How to Determine the Weight of Your Boat Trailer (VIN Sticker & Scale Method)
The easiest way to determine the weight of your boat trailer is by checking the VIN sticker (vehicle identification number plate) located on the trailer frame. On this sticker, you’ll find two important numbers:
- GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating): The maximum allowable combined weight of the trailer plus its cargo.
- MAX GVCC (Maximum Gross Vehicle Carrying Capacity): The maximum cargo or boat weight the trailer is designed to carry.
To calculate the trailer’s empty weight (also called curb weight):
GVWR – MAX GVCC = Empty Trailer Weight
Example:
For a VATB-5225 boat trailer:
- GVWR = 6,175 lbs
- MAX GVCC = 5,225 lbs
- Empty Weight = 950 lbs
So, the VATB-5225 trailer weighs 950 lbs when empty.
Important Notes:
- Weight can vary slightly depending on options and accessories such as brakes, a spare tire, upgraded bunks, or added equipment.
- For the most accurate number, you can take your trailer to a certified truck scale (such as a CAT Scale at many truck stops) and weigh it directly.
