Reliable Axle Service & Maintenance Manual
Some Venture Trailer models manufactured between 2006-2008 used Reliable Axles. Please see manual for service and maintenance instructions.
- Wheel Nut Torque: Check at 10, 25, 50, and 250 miles.
- Tire Pressure: Ensure it meets the manufacturer’s requirements.
- Brake Adjustment: Check at 250 miles.
- Brake Synchronization: Check before operating the trailer.
- Lift and support the trailer frame.
- Remove the wheel.
- Remove the grease cap carefully.
- Remove the cotter pin from the spindle.
- Unscrew the spindle nut and remove the spindle washer.
- Pull the hub, brake drum, or rotor off the spindle, ensuring the outer bearing cone does not fall out.
- Place the unit on a clean surface to prevent contamination.
Inspect the inside diameter where brake shoes contact the drum. If excessive wear, heavy scoring, or out-of-round wear exceeds .020”, the drum should be turned to the following maximum bore diameters:
- 7” Brake Drums: 7.090” Diameter
- 10” Brake Drums: 10.060” Diameter
- 12” Brake Drums: 12.090” Diameter
- For electric brakes, also inspect the armature face where the brake magnet contacts the drum.
- Place the lubricated unit onto the spindle.
- Tighten the spindle nut to 30-40 ft.-lbs. while turning the hub.
- Loosen the spindle nut completely, then finger-tighten it without moving the hub.
- Insert the cotter pin and bend its legs over the spindle.
Inspect bearings for wear or damage such as flat spots, broken cages, pitting, or corrosion. If replacement is needed:
- Tap the existing bearing cup out of the hub.
- Clean the bore area.
- Tap the new bearing cup into the hub ensuring it is seated properly.
