Installation Instructions and Owner’s Manual for Titan Titan BrakeRite EHB & BrakeRite II Actuators
Read your tow vehicles owner’s manual on towing capacity and other towing recommendations before installing brakes or this actuator. The MODEL 10 Actuator comes fully assembled and is ready to be bolted or welded onto straight three-inch wide trailer tongues. Welding can make future repair or replacement difficult but might be preferred in some cases.
- Bolt-On Installation:
- Use three 1/2 inch by 4 inch grade 5 or better bolts, nuts, and lock washers for outer case #16568 or #24777.
- For outer case #16855 or #24782, use two 5/8 inch by 4 inch grade 5 or better bolts, nuts, and lock washers.
- Tighten bolts to 80 foot-pounds of torque using a torque wrench.
- Brake System Installation:
- Install hydraulic brakes and brake lines as described in the brake installation manual.
- Use 3/16 inch brazed double wall tubing per S.A.E. J527 and forty-five-degree double-flare tube ends per S.A.E. J533.
- Do not modify the orifice connector at the rear of the actuator’s master cylinder
- Before Each Tow:
- Ensure the brake fluid reservoir is three-quarters full with DOT-3 or DOT-4 brake fluid.
- Inspect the actuator for wear, damage, or corrosion, and replace any affected components with genuine TITAN parts.
- Check and tighten actuator mounting bolts to 80 foot-pounds of torque.
- Test the actuator and brake function as described in the manual. Adjust brakes if the actuator travels over one inch during braking.
- Lubrication:
- Apply a film of clean grease on the ball to minimize squeaking and renew the film each time the trailer is used.
- Before storage or after extended use, lubricate the coupler components and internal rollers with motor oil to prevent corrosion
Wiring Instructions:
- The manual does not provide specific wiring instructions. Ensure your vehicle’s electrical system is compatible with the trailer’s braking system and follow the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions for wiring the brake actuator
Hitching Instructions:
- Measure the trailer’s tongue load with the tongue in a horizontal towing position.
- Ensure the downward force exerted on the trailer hitch ball (tongue load) is between 10% to 15% of the Gross Trailer Weight (GTW).
- Confirm the coupler and breakaway mechanisms are functioning properly before towing
Rated Capacity:
- Maximum Gross Load: 10,000 pounds (fully loaded trailer with all cargo and equipment).
- Maximum Tongue Load: 800 pounds (downward force exerted by the trailer’s coupler onto the tow vehicle’s hitch).
- The actual in-service rating is limited to that of the ball and hitch being used or the trailer manufacturer’s G.V.W.R. shown on the certification label, whichever is lower
Bleeding Instructions:
- Preparation:
- Ensure the trailer is disconnected from the tow vehicle and the tongue is in a horizontal position.
- Block the trailer wheels to prevent movement.
- Filling the Reservoir:
- Remove the master cylinder cap and fill the reservoir three-quarters full with DOT-3 or DOT-4 brake fluid.
- Avoid contact of brake fluid with painted surfaces; clean any spills immediately.
- Bleeding the System:
- Use pressure bleeding equipment as per the manufacturer’s instructions or manually with an assistant.
- Manually: Have an assistant pump the actuator while you open and close the bleeder valves to expel air from the brake lines.
- Maintain adequate fluid levels throughout the bleeding process to prevent air from entering the system
